Fabric Wrapped Ornaments {DIY}

I have been eying these fabric wrapped ball ornaments for several years.

I decided that this is the year that I am making some.I’m going with very simple and rustic decorations this year with a few touches of silver, red and gold thrown in. So these ornaments fit right into the mix.

The project needs only a few supplies: some fabric, a styrofoam ball, straight pins and some kind of ribbon or twine for a hanger.

I found these styrofoam balls that are made for ornament making at Wal-Mart for 48 cents each. They come with a hanger, but I took it off. I just pulled it out. Then I cut off the plastic silver thingy.

Next, I tore the fabric into approximately 1/2″ strips. I just gave each strip a little start with scissors. This fabric is an old linen napkin.

Using a strip of the fabric, I measured around the ball and let the fabric overlap a little. Then I trimmed off the excess. I cut the remaining strips to the same length. I pinned the first strip in place. You could also use hot glue, but pins make it really easy and quick!

I added a second strip.

I did the same for the remaining strips, covering the entire ball. You will use 8-10 strips depending on the exact width of your strips and the size of your ball. You just want to make sure all the foam is covered.

For a hanger, I just re-used the silver ribbon that came with the ball. I used a straight pin with a larger head to attach it to the ornament. Done!

I made this one out of canvas drop cloth material.

They make gorgeous filler for vases and baskets.

And, of course, they look fab on the Christmas tree.

These would even make great little gifts. You should give it a try!
