When the big boys were little, Egg in a Hole was one of their favorite breakfast meals. You may call it Egg in a Nest, Egg in a Basket, Bird in a Nest or something else entirely. As Alaina Brown of Serious Eats discovered, there are quite a lot of names for Egg in a Hole. She notes that Wikipedia even has a page for this seemingly simple dish.
Call it what you want. I simply call it delicious. A nicely fried runny yolk egg nestled in a slice of good, buttery bread…I’m in!
I have been making this a lot lately because it’s quick. If you add a side of fruit or a salad, you can have a complete meal in less than 15 minutes. All you need to make Egg in a Hole are three simple ingredients: an egg, a slice of bread and butter. Get your pan heating while you assemble everything.
On my stove, I heat my pan to the knob setting of 4, which you would think would be too low for a fried egg. But for some reason, my stove only has two settings, screaming hot or barely on. By the time, you get past 4 it’s all screaming hot. I really miss having a gas stove.
I usually cut a hole in the bread with a knife, but you can use a biscuit cutter as well.
Next, I spread the bread and the little circle of bread with butter. I like to keep some butter (the real kind) at room temp for easy spreading.
Once the pan is ready, I put a little butter in the pan. Then, I put the bread in butter side down and slide the egg into the hole. I squeeze the bread circle in the pan too, so it will get nice and toasty.
I turn it all over after a couple of minutes and cook it until the white of the egg is firm. I love a runny yolk. There you go! It’s done in a matter of minutes. For a lunch dish, I like to pair it with a little salad.
It was so yummy, that I didn’t leave a drop on the plate. I may have licked the plate, too.
Give Egg in a Hole a try and tell me how much you love it!
