Want to taste summer in a glass? Then look no further than my Watermelon Joy, a watermelon and rum cocktail recipe.
This recipe was born out of an over-abundance of watermelon in our fridge. I was looking for a fun, summer-y cocktail to take to my friend Jennifer’s new store front for our town’s First Friday festivities. Jennifer is the master behind Dot & Army, a company that manufactures cloth napkins and table linens. They recently purchased a building in downtown Brunswick where they hand make their goods and they will eventually, open a fun store front offering their linens as well as other handmade, made in Georgia goods.
They decided to open the doors for First Friday and I offered to help them celebrate by making a yummy cocktail and some appetizers. This watermelon and rum cocktail recipe was the first thing that came to mind when we were throwing around drink ideas!
At first, I didn’t really have a name for it. I mixed some rum, lime juice and a bit of agave nectar into a pitcher of watermelon juice. We referred to it as watermelon punch. Then, our friend, Elizabeth, stopped by and had a glass. She said, “Oh my! This is like summer in a glass…it’s Watermelon Joy.” Boom! Cocktail named. Elizabeth is not only a talented potter, she’s also good at naming things.
Whatever you decide to call this cocktail, I just know you will call it delicious! I hope you will try it and and love it as much as we did. It truly is a joy.

Ingredients
- 8 oz watermelon juice
- 2 oz white rum such as Don Q
- 1 oz fresh squeezed lime juice
- 1 TBSP of agave nectar
Instructions
- Puree chunks of seedless watermelon in a blender. You may have to add a little bit of water to get the puree started. Then strain the juice through a fine mesh strainer. Keep in the fridge until ready to use.
- Combine watermelon juice, rum, lime and agave nectar in a mixing glass. Stir well. Add ice to two rocks glasses and then fill with the juice mixture. Stir again and then garnish with a tiny slice of watermelon and a lime. Makes two drinks. When I make it by the pitcher, I use 8 cups of watermelon juice, 2 cups of rum, 1/2 cup of lime juice and a quarter cup of agave nectar. Makes two drinks.
