People think that you always have to start something new on January 1. But really, you have the opportunity to make changes every single day. By now, a lot of people are bemoaning the fact that they haven’t stuck with their New Year’s Resolutions. So they will give up. It doesn’t have to be like that. Changing your life doesn’t have to be black or white. It can be a lovely shade of grey.
You don’t have to exercise for an hour 5 days a week. You don’t have to switch to a strict diet. You can start slowly by aiming to exercise 3 days a week. If life gets in the way and you only get it in twice,so be it. Get back to it the next week. I think back to the Couch to 5K program I followed when I started running. The first week was mostly walking with some 30 second intervals of running mixed in. It was so hard. I couldn’t imagine how I was going to run 90 second intervals the next week. But it happened and it was kind of magical. Each week brought a new challenge. I slowly built my stamina and was able to complete a 5K about 8 weeks later. This past year I ran my first half marathon!
This slow and steady build can be a great approach to everything in your life that you want to change, from organizing your home to getting a hold on your finances, or from making a difference in your community to digging deeper in your spiritual life.
Make this the year of change. Let every day be a new chance to make your life better.
